MTN Rwandacell Plc (MTN Rwanda) has today launched the ’WeCare Month’ with a digitalization initiative in the education sector whereby the telecom has donated Rwf100,000,000 to the Ministry of Education through its newly established institution Rwanda TVET Board to facilitate the infrastructure of 10 computer labs in various TVET schools across the country.

Every year, for the past 15 years, MTN Rwanda, with its staff at the forefront, has dedicated the month of June to initiate high impact projects within their local communities. Under the theme “We Care”, this year’s program will include diverse projects in several parts of Rwanda.

MTN Rwanda has played an active role in supporting the country’s priorities in closing the digital divide. Digitalization in education has significant potential to increase equality of access to and use of education materials. With a learner centered framework, the Ministry of Education noted that the use of information and communications technology (ICT) is critical.

Commenting on the initiative, Honourable Claudette Irere, Minister of State in Charge of ICT & TVET said: “Incorporating technology in education is no longer a privilege but a necessity. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that this integration is now an urgent matter. MTN Rwanda’s contribution in fast tracking this cannot go unnoticed. We are pleased to receive this contribution that will enable the setup of 10 computer labs in different districts.”

MTN Rwanda’s support comes as a bundled package, with the provision of free internet for a year in all 10 computer labs to further facilitate learning.

Speaking during the handover; Mitwa Ng’ambi, MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer, stated: “The digital future is no longer a far fetching ambition. The time to make the crucial digital shift has arrived and as MTN, it is our vision to lead digital solutions for Rwanda’s progress. Today, the handover of Rwf 100,000,000 Rwandan in establishing 10 computer labs takes us a step further to reaching that goal.

Furthermore, this month, we will be involved in diverse projects that are geared towards positively impacting our communities in the areas of Economic Empowerment, Education and Health.”

Under the Economic Empowerment initiative, MTN Rwanda recently launched a partnership with HeHe, a technology company that enables businesses in operation optimization. This partnership consists of financial support for SMEs in the agribusiness sector and will provide trainings in digital marketing to better equip them to market their products on local and international ecommerce marketplaces.

Additionally, in Eastern province, the Government of Rwanda has emphasized the alarming increase in the number of vulnerable teen mothers. MTN Rwanda will be supporting teen mothers in Eastern Province with start-up kits to empower them to be self-sufficient and create sustainable livelihoods.

On the health front, MTN Rwanda will in coming weeks, be constructing six handwashing stations in various schools in Nyamasheke District to underwrite efforts in place to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus. The additional handwashing stations will minimize queueing and will encourage students to adhere to preventive measures.

MTN Rwanda will run these projects throughout the month of June, while continuing to explore more avenues of support to the communities throughout the course of the year.
