The Nyiragongo volcano, located in North Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, erupted on May 22, 2021, followed by severe earthquakes in parts of Rubavu District.
The effects of the eruption were that part of Rubavu District was damaged by volcanic eruptions. The quake also destroyed more than 1,200 homes.
This is why the AHF-Rwanda (AIDS Healthcare Foundation), which spearheads the fight against HIV infections and other diseases, has taken steps to help those affected by the volcano eruption and earthquake tremors in Rubavu.
The event held on Thursday, June 3, 2021, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health through its RBC Health Center, donated food, kitchen utensils, soaps, toiletries and sanitary pads, Beans, rice, blends, cooking oils all valued at 21,736,000 Frws.
One of the residents who had come to receive food aid from AHF-Rwanda was Nzarusaza Joel, a resident of Gisenyi Sector, who said he was happy with AHF’s support because the earthquake took them by surprise and caused his house to collapse. So finding food was difficult.
“I am just happy that AHF-Rwanda has helped us, it is really difficult to get food but the food they have given me includes beans, mix, rice, bath soaps, as well as plates and pans.
Akimana Josephine, 35, says her house was badly damaged and is being sheltered by her relatives, she is further thankful towards AHF-Rwanda for its support as it prepares her to return to work.
“My house collapsed due to the earthquake. I used to trade bricks from Rwanda to Congo. Now, the house has collapsed. Thank you AHF-Rwanda for helping us and giving us food, as life for me and my family was getting hard,” he said.
Healthcare Foundation Country Director,Dr. Brenda Asiimwe-Kateera, says that although the organization is focused on preventing new HIV infections and other diseases, they have opted to come and support food,kitchen and hygiene products to better prevent the spread of Covid-19 epidemic.
“After seeing noting Rubavu District receive many Congolese refugees and its people affected by the earthquake, we saw that we could contribute because the lifestyle of the residents had been affected,” she said. It is in this context that we have brought to you the support of beans, plates, pots and pans, cooking oil, rice, mixes, soaps, bags and cleaning products (Pads) so that they can use them in these difficult times after the volcanic eruption.”
Rubavu District Deputy Mayor for Social Affairs, Ishimwe Pacifique, thanked AHF-Rwanda as a partner in the region, who are constantly helping them in their daily lives.
“We are grateful to AHF-Rwanda as a partner of the District that continues to help us deal with the effects of volcanic eruptions, in fact we have a population affected by earthquakes. The number of people with damaged homes is high, and now we are going to try to share this food with them and other essentials brought as to all will get a share.
